Fortnite Season 5 Arrives Thursday, July 12

Moshi moshi?

Fortnite Season 5 is set to begin this Thursday, July 12, so sayeth Epic. The announcement was made via tweet and was accompanied by the above teaser image, which shows a fox mask peering through the now-ubiquitous crack in the universe.

The mask shares similarities with kitsune masks traditional to Japanese folklore, festivals, and live theater. The kitsune are agents of the Shinto god Inari Ōkami, whose dominion includes rice, fertility, agriculture, and prosperity, among other things. Kitsune can be malevolent or benevolent depending on the situation, and are shapeshifters traditionally known for their mischievous nature. There are many different kinds of kitsune represented in Japanese tradition, though the type seen most commonly in modern times is the hakuko, or white fox.

If you've consumed any amount of Japanese media, or visited Japan yourself, you've likely heard someone answer the telephone by saying "moshi moshi?" This informal greeting, which approximately translates to "hey hey," is used because the kitsune cannot pronounce whole words, or so the story goes. By saying moshi twice, you're assuring the person on the other end that you are in fact human, and not a fox spirit trying to pull one over.

Considering this teaser in context with the ol'-timey wagon that showed up in Battle Royale over the weekend, our guess is that Season 5 will focus on the aesthetics of different cultural histories across the world. Might we humbly suggest a costume based on the baba yaga of Slavic legend? Or better yet, a Port-a-Fort that builds the baba yaga's chicken-leg house?
